A fallen candle is enough to produce an ugly stain on your lovely upholstery chair. Luckily, there are several home remedies you can use to get rid of burn marks.
Unfortunately, once your child has blown out the candles on the birthday cake so enthusiastically that sparks have burned holes in the sofa, it is all too late. However, as long as it is only a stain, you can use various household remedies to treat it. You definitely have at least one of these resources at home:
- Vinegar
- Lemon juice
- Salt
- Onions
How easy it is to remove the burn marks then depends on the fabric. Delicate fabrics like silk are usually gone, even if they are only slightly singed. Boilable textiles such as cotton and linen and especially white fabrics are usually easy to clean. The quickness of your reaction is crucial: take care of treating the stain immediately. The quicker you act, the easier it is to remove burn marks.
When dealing with fabric furniture, rub the burn spot with the home remedy. For example, if you use half a lemon or onion, the juices will soak into the fabric quickly. Leave the textile in fresh air, ideally in the sun with the remedy on for two hours. You should now wash the spot with cloth or put it in the washing machine again if the cover is removable.
Ideally, the stain is now gone. If you can still see the shadow of the burn mark and you are very attached, you can take it to the dry cleaner. The professionals often succeed in removing burn marks where home remedies have failed.
Tips for carpet floors
You can also use the same home remedies to clean carpets. In the case of fallen candles or sparks from the open fireplace, however, the damage is often too great. Here you can help yourself with a trick: simply pluck carpet fibers from a non-visible area – for example behind or under the sofa – and glue them to the damaged area with superglue.
