Yes — with one rule that decides everything: memory foam must never get wet inside. Water that soaks into the foam does not evaporate; it sits there, grows mildew and the mattress starts to smell within days. Everything below follows from that.
Why foam is different from spring mattresses
A spring mattress has air moving through it; moisture in the padding dries out. Memory foam is a dense closed cell structure — think of a kitchen sponge that never wrings out. It also degrades with heat: high steam temperatures soften and permanently deform the foam surface.
Safe home maintenance
- Vacuum monthly with the upholstery tool — dust and skin cells sit in the top cover.
- Baking soda for odor: sprinkle, leave a few hours, vacuum thoroughly. It absorbs surface odor without moisture.
- Spot-clean with foam only: whisk mild detergent into water, apply the foam with a cloth, blot with a barely damp cloth, dry with airflow. Never pour, never soak.
- Air it — stand the mattress on its side in a ventilated room a few hours twice a year.
What destroys memory foam
- Soaking with a garden sprayer or wet towels
- Rental carpet machines with weak recovery — they inject far more than they remove
- Hot steam held on the surface — deforms the top layer
- Bleach — breaks down the polyurethane
- Drying in direct sun — foam yellows and degrades in UV
Urine, sweat and stains in foam
Accidents that soak in are the hard case: the liquid is inside the sponge. Enzyme treatment applied sparingly reaches the top layer; a professional extraction machine with strong recovery then pulls the moisture and residue back out — this is the one method that treats the inside without leaving it wet. The washable cover
Most memory foam mattresses have a zip-off cover — wash it per the label (usually cool, gentle, no dryer heat). Do NOT wash the foam core itself, and put a waterproof protector on top so accidents stop at the cover.

My memory foam mattress smells musty. Can it be saved?
If the smell is recent — airing plus surface treatment usually fixes it. A persistent musty smell means moisture reached the core; sometimes extraction saves it, sometimes replacement is honestly the answer. We tell you at inspection.
Can you steam clean memory foam at all?
Controlled-temperature hot-water extraction with immediate recovery — yes. A garment steamer or steam mop held on the foam — no.
How long does memory foam take to dry after professional cleaning?
Surface-dry in 3–4 hours with airflow; we clean in the morning so it is ready by bedtime. Never remake the bed on a foam mattress that still feels cool to the touch.
