Pizza night, buttered popcorn, hand lotion, hair oils on the headrest — grease is the stain family upholstery collects constantly, and the one water alone never removes. The method is the opposite of a wine spill: absorb first, dissolve second.
Step 1: absorb, do not wet
Fresh grease: cover the spot generously with cornstarch or baby powder and walk away for 20–30 minutes. The powder pulls oil out of the fiber. Vacuum it off. Repeat once if the powder keeps darkening. Do NOT start with water — it spreads the oil ring wider.
Step 2: dissolve what remains
- W-code fabric: dish soap is a degreaser by design. A teaspoon in two cups of warm (not hot) water, blot on, let sit five minutes, blot off, rinse-blot, dry.
- S-code fabric: rubbing alcohol or a citrus solvent on a white cloth, blotting from edge to center. Test on a hidden spot first.
- Old set-in grease: darkened patches on armrests and headrests are oxidized oil bonded to the fiber — home methods lighten, professional solvent pre-treatment plus hot-water extraction removes.
The armrest-and-headrest problem
The most common “grease stain” is not a spill at all: it is months of skin contact — body oils darkening the touch zones. It builds so gradually people think the fabric faded. A deep clean of those panels restores the true color; that contrast is the most striking before/after in our portfolio.
Leather is different
Never degrease leather with dish soap or alcohol — you strip the finish along with the oil. Blot, apply cornstarch overnight, and if the mark stays it needs pH-neutral leather cleaning: see our leather furniture service.

Does WD-40 or mechanic degreaser work on fabric?
They dissolve grease and add their own solvent-oil stain plus a smell that outlives everything. Household dish soap or professional products only.
Hair oil soaked into my fabric headboard. Same method?
Yes — cornstarch, then soap or alcohol by code. Headboards are thin over wood, so use minimal liquid; heavy saturation reaches the backing and marks through.
Takeout grease went through onto the cushion foam. Problem?
Foam holds oil and re-releases it into the fabric. If a fresh grease mark keeps reappearing after cleaning, the foam core needs extraction treatment — mention it when booking.
