Persian and Oriental Rugs: Why They Need Different Care

A hand-knotted Persian or Oriental rug is not a carpet with a pattern — it is wool or silk on a cotton foundation, often with natural dyes, frequently older than the apartment it lives in. Almost everything that works on a synthetic wall-to-wall carpet is wrong here. Here is what these rugs actually need.

What makes them different

  • Natural dyes can run. Older and vegetable-dyed rugs bleed color when over-wetted, and red bleeding into a cream field is not reversible at home. Every honest cleaning starts with a dye-stability test on the hidden fringe edge.
  • Wool has lanolin. Harsh alkaline chemistry strips it, leaving the pile dry, brittle and dull — the reason some rugs look worse a year after a cheap cleaning (wool fundamentals).
  • Cotton foundations brown. Over-wetting wicks natural cellulose browning to the surface as it dries, showing up as a yellow-tan haze days later.
  • Fringes are structure, not decoration. They are the warp threads the rug is built on. Aggressive brushing destroys them and repair is specialist work.
  • Silk is its own category — low moisture, gentle chemistry, and a genuinely conservative approach.

In-home cleaning versus the plant

Honest distinction. In-home, which is what we do, suits rugs in good condition needing regular maintenance: controlled-moisture extraction, wool-safe neutral chemistry, careful drying with airflow, done in your apartment in about an hour. Plant immersion — full submersion washing at a specialist facility — is for heavy soiling, deep pet contamination throughout the foundation, flood exposure or restoration of a valuable antique. When a rug needs that, we say so rather than attempting a version of it on your floor.

The problems we are called for

Pet accidents are the most common and the most urgent: urine passes through the pile into the foundation and the pad beneath, and it damages wool fibers chemically over time as well as smelling (why enzymes plus extraction are required). Waiting is what turns a treatable accident into permanent dye damage.

Traffic lanes — the darkened path across the middle is abrasive grit ground into the pile, and it wears the rug out physically while it sits there (why lanes go first).

Moth damage, which is not a cleaning problem but is frequently discovered during one. Larvae eat wool, particularly in undisturbed areas under furniture. We flag it; treatment is a different trade.

Care between cleanings

  1. Vacuum without the beater bar, in the pile direction, and never over the fringe.
  2. Rotate 180 degrees once a year to even out sun fading and traffic wear.
  3. Use a proper rug pad. It prevents slipping, absorbs impact and lets air move underneath — the last part matters more than people think (choosing one).
  4. Blot spills, never scrub, and skip vinegar and household cleaners entirely on natural dyes.

Professional cleaning every one to three years depending on traffic, sooner after any accident. From $99, with dye testing before anything gets wet: carpet and rug cleaning, +1 (631) 829-4082, 5.0 across 500+ reviews.

Oriental rug FAQ

How do I know if my rug is hand-knotted?

Look at the back: hand-knotted rugs show the pattern clearly through the reverse, with slightly irregular knots. Machine-made rugs have a uniform grid and often a fabric backing.

Is it safe to clean a very old rug at home?

Depends on condition. Sound pile and stable dyes, yes. Brittle foundation, prior bleeding or visible dry rot means a specialist plant, and we will tell you which category yours is in.

Can you clean it under the furniture?

We shift what moves easily and clean around what does not. If the rug is fully anchored under a heavy sectional, an honest partial clean is what you get — and we say so before starting.
