A Craigslist sectional for a tenth of retail, a stoop-sale armchair in Park Slope — second-hand furniture is how half of NYC gets furnished. Worth it, with two conditions: inspect before you pay, and deep-clean before it comes inside. Here is the checklist we would use for our own apartment.
Inspect before you buy (5 minutes)
- Bed bugs. Deal-breaker. Check seams, under cushions, the frame underside and the fabric folds for tiny black dots (droppings), rust-colored smears or shed skins. Any sign — walk away; no cleaning fixes an infestation reliably.
- Mold and mildew. A musty smell, dark speckles on the underside or backing. Surface mildew on fabric is cleanable; mold in the padding or frame is not worth the fight.
- Odor. Smoke and pet urine soak into foam. Removable — but factor a professional treatment into the price.
- Structure. Sit on it; a good frame is silent. Sagging is foam, cheap to replace; a cracking frame is not.
Before it comes inside
- If possible, keep it in a hallway, garage or covered area for the deep clean — not in your bedroom.
- Vacuum everything — seams, under cushions, the frame — with a crevice tool. Dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister outside.
- Deep clean — hot-water extraction removes previous owners’ skin cells, dust mites, pet dander and odors through the full fabric depth. Steam heat above 130°F also kills dust mites and most bacteria in the top padding.
- Enzyme treatment for any pet or smoke odor — the source is in the foam, and fragrance will not fix it. See pet stain and odor removal.
- Let it dry fully before it goes into use — 2–6 hours.
Why not just wipe it down
Surface wiping addresses what you can see. What you inherit from a previous household lives inside — dust mite colonies, allergens, dander, smoke residue in the padding. Different checklist: look for cracking and peeling (bonded leather peels and cannot be saved), then clean and condition before use. Leather does not harbor dust mites the way fabric does, so odor and finish are the main concerns.

Can a used couch bring bed bugs even if I saw none?
Eggs are nearly invisible. If the seller’s home showed any risk, or the piece sat outside on a stoop, isolate it (hallway/garage) for a week and inspect again before bringing it in. Bed bugs are a pest-control matter, not cleaning.
Does steam cleaning kill bed bugs?
Direct steam kills bugs and eggs it touches, but reaching every seam and frame joint reliably is a pest-control job. Do not rely on upholstery cleaning as bed bug treatment.
