Dust Mites in Your Mattress: Signs, Health Effects, and How to Get Rid of Them

If you wake up sneezing, with a stuffy nose or itchy eyes that get better during the day, your mattress is the first suspect. Dust mites live where we sleep: warmth, humidity and a steady supply of dead skin cells make a mattress their ideal home. Here is how to know you have them and what actually works against them.

Signs your mattress has a dust mite problem

  • Allergy symptoms strongest in the morning and in the bedroom
  • A dusty, stale smell from the bed even after airing the room
  • Worsening asthma or eczema at night
  • The mattress is over two years old and has never been deep-cleaned

You cannot see the mites themselves — they are a quarter of a millimeter. The allergen is not the mite but its droppings, which accumulate in the top layers of padding and rise into the air every time you turn over.

What does not work

  • Vacuuming with a regular vacuum. It picks up surface dust; mites cling to fibers deeper in and most allergen stays put.
  • Airing and sun. Helps humidity a little, does not remove the allergen already inside.
  • Fragrance sprays. They mask the smell and add chemicals to the surface you sleep on.

What actually works

  1. Hot-water extraction (steam cleaning). Temperature above 130°F kills mites through the padding, and the extraction pulls out both the mites and their droppings — the allergen itself. This is the core of our mattress cleaning service.
  2. Washing bedding weekly at 140°F. Pillowcases and sheets re-seed the mattress if washed cool.
  3. An encasement cover after cleaning keeps a cleaned mattress protected — put it on a clean mattress, not over the allergen.
  4. Humidity below 50%. Mites cannot drink; they absorb moisture from the air. Dry air slows the colony dramatically.

How often to deep-clean a mattress

Every six months if anyone in the home has allergies or asthma, once a year otherwise. Kids’ mattresses more often — children spend more hours in bed and sweat more. A deep clean takes about an hour, and the mattress is dry by evening: see how our mattress cleaning works. We come to homes across Queens, Brooklyn and all of NYC and NJ.

Dust mite FAQ

Do dust mites bite?

No. The itching people blame on bites is an allergic reaction to their droppings. If you have actual bite marks, the problem is something else — bed bugs need a pest service, not cleaning.

Can a mattress be too old to bother cleaning?

If it is sagging or over 8–10 years old, cleaning will not fix the structure — replacement makes more sense. If it is comfortable and just dirty, cleaning costs a fraction of a new mattress.

Does freezing kill dust mites?

For pillows and toys — yes, a day in a freezer works. A mattress does not fit in a freezer, and winter air on a balcony is neither cold enough nor long enough to matter.
