“Steam or dry cleaning?” is the first question we hear about upholstery. The honest answer: it depends on the fabric, not on marketing. Here is the difference in plain terms and a simple way to know which your sofa needs.
What each method actually is
Steam cleaning (properly: hot-water extraction) injects hot cleaning solution into the fabric under pressure and immediately vacuums it back out together with dissolved dirt. It cleans the full depth of the fiber and removes allergens, odors and most stains — this is what we use for the majority of sofa cleaning jobs.
Dry cleaning is a family of low-moisture methods: solvent-based products or foam that dissolve grime and are removed by vacuum without soaking the fabric. “Dry” is relative — a little moisture is still involved, but the padding stays dry.
Which fabrics need which method
- W code (water-safe): microfiber, most synthetics, many cotton blends → steam gives the deepest clean.
- S code (solvent only): some linens, rayon, certain wool blends → water leaves rings; low-moisture only.
- W/S: either method works; we choose by how dirty the piece is.
- X: vacuum only by the tag — in practice these pieces need a professional assessment.
- Leather is neither: it gets its own pH-neutral cleaning and conditioning — see leather furniture cleaning.
Side-by-side comparison
- Cleaning depth: steam wins — it reaches the base of the fiber and the top of the padding.
- Odor and allergen removal: steam wins — heat kills bacteria and dust mites, extraction removes them.
- Drying time: dry methods win — 1–2 hours versus 2–6 for steam.
- Delicate fabric safety: dry methods win — no water, no shrinkage, no rings.
- Old stains: steam wins in most cases; some stains need a solvent pre-treatment plus extraction — a combination, which is what professionals actually do.
What we recommend in practice
Do not choose the method — choose the result and let the fabric decide the method. At inspection we check the care code, test on a hidden spot and pick steam, low-moisture, or a combination. That is included in every visit, from $99, anywhere in Manhattan, the Bronx and the rest of NYC and New Jersey.
Method FAQ
Can steam cleaning shrink my sofa fabric?
On W-code fabrics — no: temperature and moisture are controlled. Shrinkage happens when water hits S-code fabric, which is exactly why the care-tag check comes first.
Is dry cleaning worse at removing pet odor?
Yes. Odor lives deep in the padding, and low-moisture methods work near the surface. Pet odor needs enzyme treatment plus extraction — see our pet stain and odor removal.
How soon can I sit on the sofa after each method?
After a dry clean — about an hour. After steam — 2–6 hours depending on fabric thickness. Book a morning slot and either way the sofa is ready by evening.
