How Often Should You Clean Your Mattress? A Realistic Schedule

Nobody deep-cleans a mattress “often enough” — the question is what schedule actually matters versus marketing fear. Short version: once a year for a typical adult bedroom, every six months if allergies, pets or small children are involved. Here is the reasoning and the signs you are overdue.

What accumulates, and how fast

A sleeping adult sheds skin cells and about half a pint of moisture a night. In a year that feeds a full dust-mite ecosystem in the top padding layer: mites, their droppings (the actual allergen), plus sweat salts that yellow the fabric. Sheets catch some of it; washing them weekly is necessary but does not protect the mattress itself.

The schedule

  • Standard adult bedroom: deep clean once a year, rotate the mattress twice a year.
  • Allergies or asthma in the household: every 6 months — the allergen load, not dirt, is what you are managing. See our dust-mite guide for the symptoms.
  • Pets sleeping on the bed: every 6 months, plus enzyme treatment after any accident, immediately.
  • Kids’ beds: every 6 months — more sweat, more accidents, more floor-time for the bedding.
  • After illness, after buying a used mattress, after water damage: right away, regardless of schedule.

Signs you are overdue

  • Morning congestion or sneezing that fades during the day
  • Yellowed patches where you sleep
  • A stale smell the bedding does not explain
  • You cannot remember the last deep clean

What a deep clean involves

Dry vacuuming, enzyme treatment of stains, hot-water extraction that kills mites through the padding and pulls out the residue, deodorizing. About an hour per mattress, dry by evening — details on our mattress cleaning page. We work across NYC and NJ, including Queens and Brooklyn, from $99.

Mattress schedule FAQ

Does a mattress protector replace cleaning?

It slows the buildup dramatically and is worth using — on a mattress that is already clean. It does not fix what is inside, and the protector itself needs washing monthly.

Is yearly cleaning worth it on a cheap mattress?

If the mattress is comfortable and under 8 years old — yes, cleaning costs a fraction of replacement. Sagging or older than that: put the money toward a new one instead. We will tell you honestly at inspection.

Can I steam it myself with a garment steamer?

A garment steamer heats the surface without extraction — it adds moisture but leaves allergen and residue inside. If DIY, at least use a proper extraction machine; the mattress must not stay damp.
