Year-round allergies in a New York apartment are rarely about pollen. The usual triggers are inside: dust mites and pet dander in the mattress, sofa and rug — amplified every winter when radiators dry the air and blow fine dust around a sealed apartment. Cleaning is not a cure, but the right cleaning in the right order makes a difference you can feel within a week.
Where the allergen actually is
- The mattress — you spend a third of your life on it; dust mites and their droppings concentrate here. Highest priority.
- The sofa — second most-used surface, plus pet dander if you have animals.
- Area rugs — allergens settle to the base of the pile and get kicked up with every step.
- Curtains and bedding — washable; do it, but the big three above are where deep cleaning matters.
What actually reduces the load
- Hot-water extraction — kills dust mites with heat and, more importantly, removes their droppings (the allergen). Vacuuming alone leaves most of it. Start with the mattress, then the sofa, then rugs.
- Encasements on a freshly cleaned mattress and pillows — they keep the cleaned state.
- Humidity under 50% — mites need moisture; radiator season helps here, summer AC does the same job.
- Weekly vacuuming with a HEPA vacuum — maintenance between deep cleans.
- Fragrance-free everything — scented sprays and “freshening” powders are irritants themselves.
Radiator season specifics
From October, radiator convection lifts fine dust onto upholstery and dries mucous membranes so they react to less. Vacuum fabric surfaces weekly through winter and schedule the deep clean in early fall so you start the season with a low load. See dust mites in your mattress for the symptom checklist.
What to expect
People with dust-mite allergy usually notice easier mornings within days of a mattress and sofa clean; pet dander improves as long as the pet is off the cleaned surfaces. Cleaning does not fix pollen or mold — if symptoms are seasonal or you smell must, that is a different problem. We use organic, non-allergic, fragrance-free products on every visit, in all five boroughs and NJ — for example Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
Allergy FAQ
How often should an allergy household deep-clean?
Mattress and sofa every 6 months, rugs every 6–12 months. Timing one cycle for early fall pays off most.
Will cleaning help if we have a cat?
It removes accumulated dander so the baseline drops. Ongoing exposure continues while the cat is around; encasements and keeping the cat off the bed matter as much as the cleaning.
Are the products safe for asthma?
Fragrance-free organic solutions with full extraction — nothing volatile stays in the room. Ventilate during drying, as with any cleaning.
