NYC balconies, rooftops and backyards get maybe five good months — and the cushions spend the rest of the year either mildewing in a corner or soaking up soot. Outdoor fabric is tougher than indoor, but it fights a different set of stains: mildew, sunscreen, bird droppings and city grime. Here is the seasonal routine.
Know your fabric
- Solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella-type): the color is in the fiber; it tolerates diluted bleach and scrubbing. Best case.
- Polyester outdoor fabric: weather-resistant, not bleach-tolerant; mild soap only.
- Cotton canvas / indoor fabric used outside: mildews fast and bleeds color; treat like indoor upholstery.
Spring: the mildew clean
- Brush off loose dirt dry.
- For acrylic: a solution of mild soap plus a small amount of bleach (per the fabric maker’s guidance), soft brush, let sit 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly with a hose, air dry in sun. Kills mildew and lifts the gray.
- For polyester and cotton: oxygen-based cleaner instead of bleach, same steps.
- Dry completely — stand cushions on edge so water drains out of the foam.
Sunscreen and body oils
Sunscreen is an oil-based stain and the summer’s most common one. Cornstarch first to absorb, then dish-soap foam, rinse. Avobenzone sunscreens can leave an orange stain on light fabric after sun exposure — treat it the same day if you can.
Bird droppings
Let them dry fully, then brush off — wet wiping smears and sets. Acidic; rinse the spot afterward so the fabric does not weaken there.
When mildew is too deep
If the foam inside smells musty after the cover is clean, the mildew is in the core. Foam can sometimes be rinsed and dried in sun over two days; if the smell persists, replace the foam (much cheaper than new cushions) and keep the cleaned covers.
Winter storage
- Clean and dry fully before storing — storing damp is how spring mildew starts
- Breathable storage (a bag or bin with airflow), not sealed plastic
- Indoors if at all possible; a covered balcony corner is the minimum

Removable acrylic covers usually can, cold, then air dry — zip them and close velcro first. Foam cores: no.

The cushions were left out all winter. Salvageable?
