A freshly cleaned sofa can smell — and which smell, and for how long, tells you whether the job was done right. A faint damp-textile smell that disappears as it dries is normal. A sour, musty or strong chemical smell the next day is a sign something went wrong. Here is how to read it and what to do.
Normal: damp textile, gone within hours
Wet fabric smells like wet fabric. With proper extraction the sofa is damp, not wet, and the smell fades as it dries — 2–6 hours with airflow. Open a window, run a fan across the sofa, and it is over by evening.
Not normal: sour or musty the next day
This means moisture stayed in the padding — over-wetting with weak recovery. Bacteria in damp foam produce the sour note; mildew the musty one. Fix: the sofa needs re-extraction with strong recovery plus forced-air drying, not air freshener. Not normal: strong perfume
Fragrance-heavy products are used to cover what was not removed. A well-cleaned sofa smells like nothing. If the room smells like a scented candle for days, the odor source is still in the fabric underneath. Ask for fragrance-free products — it is what we use by default.
Returning pet or smoke smell
The sofa smelled fine for a day, then the old smell came back. That is a source left in the foam — urine crystals or smoke residue — reactivated by the moisture of cleaning. Chemical or “wet dog” smell on wool
Wool blends smell like wet wool while damp — that is the fiber, and it passes with drying. A persistent chemical note on wool usually means an alkaline cleaner was used; wool needs pH-neutral products (see wool cleaning).

Can I spray fabric freshener to speed it up?
It adds a scent on top and, if the fabric is damp, moisture. Airflow is the only thing that speeds drying.
Is the smell harmful?
