Red wine on the couch feels like a catastrophe, but a fresh spill comes out more often than not. The catch: almost every popular home remedy — salt, white wine, hot water — makes it worse. Here is what actually helps.
Fresh spill: the first five minutes
- Blot, never rub. Press dry white towels into the spill until they come away barely damp. Rubbing grinds the pigment into the fiber.
- Cool water only. Dampen a cloth and keep blotting — wine dilutes and lifts. Hot water cooks the tannins into the fabric permanently.
- Dish soap solution (a teaspoon in two cups of cool water) for what remains: blot on, blot off, dry towel after.
The myths that ruin sofas
- Salt. It absorbs some liquid, then acts as an abrasive and pushes pigment deeper as you scrape it off. Fine for tablecloths going into a washing machine, bad for upholstery.
- White wine on red wine. You now have two stains and a sticky patch.
- Hydrogen peroxide mixes from the internet. On colored fabric they bleach a pale spot that no cleaner can restore.
Dried red wine: manage expectations
Dried wine has bonded with the fiber. At home you can lighten it with repeated dish-soap cycles, but the purple shadow usually stays. Check the care code first
All of the above applies to W and W/S fabrics. If the tag under the cushion says S (solvent only) or X — do not use water at all: blot dry and book a professional before the stain cures. Velvet and viscose blends watermark badly.

Does club soda work on red wine?
Slightly better than plain water because of the carbonation, much worse than doing the soap cycle properly. If it is what you have at the table — use it for the first blotting, then switch to the method above.
The stain turned blue-gray after I cleaned it. Why?
Wine pigment changes color with pH — usually a sign an alkaline cleaner was used. It is still removable professionally in most cases, but stop experimenting at that point.
