A sleeper sofa works double duty and gets half the care: the sofa part is at least visible, but the mattress inside folds away unaired after every guest and never sees daylight. If your sofa bed smells faintly metallic-musty when opened, that is the mattress asking. Here is how both parts get cleaned properly.
The sofa part
Standard upholstery rules: fabric code check, vacuuming, pre-treatment, extraction — same as any sofa cleaning. The differences: the seat cushions usually lift off completely (clean both sides), and crumbs collect in the mechanism cavity below — we vacuum inside with the bed folded out.
The mattress inside
- Why it suffers: guests sweat like anyone, but this mattress gets folded away within hours — moisture trapped, never aired. That is the musty note.
- Cleaning: unfolded fully, cleaned like a regular mattress — vacuum, enzyme spot treatment, extraction, deodorizing — then left open to dry completely before folding. Folding it damp undoes everything.
- Thin sleeper mattresses dry fast — 2–3 hours open.
The mechanism and frame
The metal frame collects dust felt; the hinge area collects everything that fell through the cushions. A visit includes vacuuming the cavity and the frame — not oiling the mechanism (that is furniture service, and WD-40 near fabric leaves odor; see grease on fabric).
How often
- Sofa part: like any sofa — every 6–12 months by use
- Mattress: after every stretch of regular guest use, or twice a year if it hosts often
- Always: air the mattress open for a few hours after a guest leaves, before folding
Booking logic
Sofa + internal mattress in one visit takes about two hours and is priced as a sleeper sofa job (see price ranges) — cheaper than sofa and mattress booked separately. Common in Manhattan studios and one-bedrooms where the sleeper is the guest room.
Sleeper sofa FAQ
The mattress has yellow patches. Normal?
Same as any mattress — oxidized sweat. It cleans; see yellow stains on a mattress.
Can the thin sleeper mattress be replaced instead?
Yes, replacements exist ($150–400) and are worth it if the mattress is sagging on the fold lines. If it is just dirty — cleaning is a fraction of that.
Our sofa bed is the everyday bed. How often then?
Treat it as a primary mattress: deep clean every 6 months, protector on top, aired open daily rather than folded immediately.
