A work-from-home chair logs more contact hours than any sofa — 2000+ a year — and it is usually the last thing anyone cleans. The good news: a fabric office chair is small, and each part takes minutes. Here is the home routine, part by part, and the sign the seat needs real extraction.
The seat (fabric)
- Vacuum with the upholstery tool — crumbs live in the seam where seat meets back.
- Check for a fabric code label under the seat; most task chairs are W-code polyester.
- Dish soap foam over the whole seat (not spot-only — rings), worked in with a soft brush.
- Blot with a damp cloth, then dry cloth; let it dry before sitting — 1–2 hours.
The greasy sheen on the front edge is skin oil from bare legs and hands; that spot needs the degreasing logic from grease stains — cornstarch first if heavy.
The mesh back
Mesh does not absorb, it collects: dust settles in the weave. Vacuum both sides, wipe with a barely damp microfiber cloth. Never soak — many mesh backs sit on a glued frame.
Arms, base, wheels
- Arms: the grimiest part per square inch. All-purpose cleaner on plastic/PU arms; leather-look arms need mild soap only.
- Wheels: flip the chair, pull hair out of the axles, wipe the treads — half of “my chair rolls badly” is hair, not bearings.
- Gas lift and base: a wipe; nothing else needed.

Body oils in the seat foam, warmed. Surface cleaning will not reach it; one extraction pass will.
Can I use carpet spray foam on the seat?
It works like any foam but often leaves sticky residue that re-soils fast. Dish soap foam rinsed properly is safer; extraction is better.
