My down cushions went flat — is that dirt or age?
Usually neither: it is compression and humidity. Fluff-and-air first; if loft does not return, the fill has broken down and a feather-supply shop can re-stuff the ticking — far cheaper than new cushions.
Can down cushion inserts go in a washing machine?
The inserts from small throw pillows sometimes survive it (low, cool, tennis balls in the dryer, hours of drying). Sofa-cushion inserts are too big to dry properly at home — trapped moisture ruins more of them than dirt ever does.
Allergic to down — or to what is in it?
