Nesting mode is real, and cleaning tends to go both too far and not far enough — the nursery walls get scrubbed while the family bed the baby will actually spend hours on has not been deep-cleaned in years. Here is a calm list of what matters before a newborn arrives, and what to use.
What to clean before the baby comes
- Your own mattress — most newborns spend a lot of time on the parents’ bed for feeding and naps. Dust mites and their allergen are what you are removing; a deep clean 2–4 weeks before the due date, then a washable protector. See how often to clean a mattress.
- The sofa — the second most-used baby surface. Same logic: allergens, previous pets, and whatever the fabric has collected. Our sofa cleaning uses fragrance-free, non-allergic products.
- Hand-me-down crib mattress or bassinet — deep clean and fully dry before use; a used crib mattress can carry mold if it was stored damp. If it smells musty after airing, replace it.
- Area rugs where the baby will do floor time — extraction pulls out the grit and allergens at the base of the pile.
What does NOT need it
A brand-new crib mattress out of the packaging: air it a few days for the manufacturing smell to fade, then use. No cleaning products — they only add residue.
What products are safe around a newborn
- Organic, non-allergic, fragrance-free solutions — fragrance is the most common irritant, not “chemicals” in general
- Hot-water extraction that recovers moisture — no damp padding, no mildew risk
- Full drying before the baby is on the surface: 2–4 hours for a mattress
Ask any cleaner two questions: is it fragrance-free, and how long until dry. Those matter more than the brand on the bottle.
Timing
Two to four weeks before the due date is the sweet spot: everything is dry and aired long before, and you are not coordinating a technician visit with a newborn’s sleep. New parents FAQ
Is steam cleaning safe for a crib mattress?
Yes, with controlled temperature and moisture and fragrance-free products; crib mattresses are thin and dry fast. Waterproof-covered ones need only the surface wiped.
How do I clean spit-up and diaper accidents on the mattress later?
Cold water blot for anything protein-based, enzyme treatment for urine — same as for adults, just gentler with moisture. A waterproof protector makes 95% of this a laundry issue instead.
We have a cat that sleeps on the bed. Extra concern?
Cat dander is a strong allergen and it is in the mattress fabric. A deep clean removes what is there; a protector plus keeping the cat off during the first months handles the rest.
