Down, Foam or Fiber: How to Tell What Is in Your Cushions

Two sofas in the same fabric can need completely different handling because of what is inside the cushions. Fill decides how much moisture is safe, how long drying takes, and whether a flat cushion is a cleaning problem or a replacement one. Here is how to identify yours and what it means.

The 30-second test

  1. Press the cushion and let go. Springs straight back to shape: foam. Stays dented until you fluff it: down or down-wrap. Slowly recovers with a soft, lumpy feel: polyester fiber.
  2. Unzip and look. An inner ticking bag with visible quills through it means feather. A solid block means foam. A loose batting mass means fiber.
  3. Weigh it in your hands. Foam is light for its size, down is surprisingly light and shiftable, fiber sits between.
  4. Check the tag, which sometimes states the fill and saves you all of the above.

What each fill means for cleaning

High-density foam. The most forgiving: tolerates proper extraction, dries at the fast end of the two-to-six-hour range, and keeps its shape. The caveat is that foam holds water like a sponge if over-wetted, which is why under-powered equipment causes musty cushions.

Memory foam. Same caution multiplied — no internal airflow, so moisture has nowhere to go. Low-moisture method and assisted drying, always (the same rules as memory-foam mattresses).

Down and feather. The premium fill and the most demanding: wet feathers clump and smell, and re-lofting after drying is part of the job rather than an afterthought (the full down guide). Spills that reach the ticking need fast, aggressive drying.

Polyester fiber. Cleans easily and compresses permanently. A flat fiber cushion is not dirty, it is spent — the fill has broken down and no cleaning restores loft.

Down-wrapped foam. The common compromise: foam core for shape, feather jacket for comfort. Treated as down at the surface and foam at the core.

Why this changes what we do on site

Fill is one of the first things the technician establishes at the walkthrough, alongside the fabric code, because it sets the moisture budget for the whole job (the inspection). A W-code cotton over high-density foam takes a full extraction; the same fabric over a feather insert gets a lighter pass and longer drying. Companies that clean every sofa identically are guessing at this, and the musty cushion three days later is the result.

When flatness is not a cleaning problem

People frequently book a cleaning hoping it will revive sagging cushions. It will not — soil removal does not restore structure. Foam that has lost its resilience and fiber that has compressed both need re-stuffing, which an upholstery workroom does far more cheaply than replacing the sofa (the keep-or-replace math). We say this before the booking rather than after, because a clean flat cushion is still a flat cushion.

Cushion fill FAQ

Can cushion inserts be replaced without reupholstering?

Yes, and it is the most underrated furniture repair there is. New foam inserts cut to your covers cost a fraction of a new sofa.

Does fill type affect how often I should clean?

Not really — use does. What fill changes is method and drying time, not the schedule (the frequency matrix).

My cushions smell but the fabric looks clean. Which is it?

Almost always the core. Fabric is what you see; fill is what holds odor — and that is exactly the gap between surface cleaning and extraction (why it comes back).
