The basement question
Finished basements are the borough’s living rooms — and below grade means humidity. Consequences for soft surfaces:
- Carpet holds a faint musty note even when “clean” — moisture plus trapped dust
- Sofas against exterior basement walls collect condensation-fed mildew on their backs
- Odors last longer downstairs because airflow is weakest there
What works: extraction cleaning with forced drying (we bring airflow, not just hope), furniture pulled a few inches off exterior walls, and a dehumidifier running below 50% — the same rule as for mattress mold prevention. A basement that smells musty within a month of cleaning has a humidity problem, not a cleaning problem, and we say so.
Whole-house carpet logic
Typical Island layout — carpeted bedrooms upstairs, stairs, living areas, basement — cleans best as one route: upstairs first, working down, stairs tread by tread, basement last with fans running. Yes — forced-air drying replaces open windows; drying runs 4–8 hours for carpet as usual.
Our basement flooded last year; the carpet was dried but smells in summer. Fixable?
If padding was soaked and only surface-dried, the odor lives there — that zone needs padding replacement, not another wash. We check with a moisture meter at inspection and tell you which case you have.
