10 Upholstery Cleaning Myths New Yorkers Still Believe

Most of what people “know” about upholstery cleaning comes from viral videos and ads. Some of it is harmless; some of it ruins sofas. Here are the ten myths we hear most often in New York apartments — and what fifteen years of actual cleaning says instead.

The myths, debunked

  1. “Baking soda deep-cleans a couch.” It absorbs some surface odor for a day; it removes no soil and works its way into the cushion foam, where it stays. Half our extraction water in “baking-soda homes” is white. Fine as a light refresher — not a cleaning (what actually cleans fabric).
  2. “Steam ruins upholstery.” Wrong method ruins upholstery. Hot-water extraction on a W-code fabric is the industry standard; the same machine on an S-code linen is a mistake — which is why the fabric check comes first (method vs fabric).
  3. “A new couch does not need cleaning for years.” NYC soot, skin oils and cooking aerosols start building from week one; by the time a couch looks dirty, the fiber is abraded. Annual cleaning is maintenance, not rescue (the real schedule).
  4. “Store-bought foam sprays do the same job.” Foam sprays dissolve some soil and leave it — plus their own residue — in the fabric, where it becomes a dirt magnet. The gray “clean” couch is usually a residue couch.
  5. “If it smells clean, it is clean.” Fragrance is the cheapest ingredient in any bottle. Removal has no smell; perfume after cleaning often means odor was covered (what clean actually smells like).
  6. “Professional cleaning soaks the sofa for days.” Proper extraction recovers most of the moisture immediately: 2–6 hours to dry. A sofa wet next morning was cleaned badly (drying math).
  7. “The $49 whole-sofa ad is a bargain.” It is a door opener: the price triples at your apartment or the visit takes twenty minutes and changes nothing. Anatomy of the trick: real NYC prices.
  8. “Pet stains just need a good scrub.” Scrubbing pushes urine deeper and sets the protein. Enzymes plus extraction remove it; elbow grease spreads it (the pet-odor guide).
  9. “All cleaners do basically the same thing.” Ten minutes of questions proves otherwise — method, price structure, COI, honesty about what will not come out (the ten questions).
  10. “Cleaning shrinks and fades fabric.” Wrong temperature and over-wetting do. Correct method on tested fabric does not — which is why we test a hidden spot on every piece, every visit (the visit walkthrough).

Why myths persist

Viral cleaning videos reward dramatic before-afters, not durable results; a shaving-foam “transformation” looks great for 48 hours, then the residue starts collecting dirt. Meanwhile honest cleaning is visually boring: machine, water, done. Our 5.0 rating across 500+ reviews was built on the boring version — sofa, mattress, carpet, from $99, across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Photo quote: +1 (631) 829-4082.

Myths FAQ

Is vinegar safe on upholstery?

Diluted, on W-code fabric, for a fresh spill — sometimes. On natural fibers and old stains it can set the problem. When in doubt, blot with water and ask.

Do UV sanitizing wands replace cleaning?

No — surface UV does nothing for soil, oils or allergens inside the cushion. Extraction removes them physically.

Does professional cleaning void the furniture warranty?

The opposite is more common: several manufacturers require periodic professional cleaning. Check the care tag and keep the invoice.
