IKEA Couch Covers: Machine Wash or Professional Cleaning?

The removable cover is IKEA’s best furniture idea, and the source of a very specific NYC disaster: the cover that comes back from the wash a size smaller, two shades lighter, or with a zipper that no longer closes. Before you strip the KIVIK, here is the honest decision tree.

Check the tag — IKEA speaks in codes too

  • Machine wash 40°C: most cotton-poly covers (EKTORP, many KIVIK, SÖDERHAMN fabrics) — washable with rules below
  • Dry clean only: a surprising number of newer covers, all the wool blends and some bouclés — the machine shrinks them, full stop
  • No removable cover at all: many UPPLAND/VIMLE seat frames, most armchairs’ body panels — cleaning in place is the only option

If you do machine wash: the rules that save covers

  1. Wash ALL covers of the piece together, every time — sun and washing shift color; one washed cushion on an unwashed sofa glows
  2. Cold or 30°C gentle, mild detergent, no bleach — the 40 on the tag is the survivable maximum, not the recommendation
  3. Zip closed before washing — open zippers chew fabric and themselves
  4. Air dry, put back slightly damp — the dryer is where covers shrink; slightly damp covers stretch back onto cushions and dry to fit
  5. Expect the wash to do nothing for the foam — sweat, spills and odor sit in the cushion core the cover was protecting (why the smell survives the wash)

When professional cleaning in place wins

  • The cushion cores smell or have stains bleeding through — machine-washing covers cannot reach foam; extraction cleans cover and core as one system (pet accidents always soak through)
  • Dry-clean-only covers — in-place low-moisture cleaning costs about what the dry cleaner charges, without the disassembly afternoon
  • Fitted and aging covers — a five-year-old cover that barely zips today will not zip after a wash
  • The non-removable parts — armrests and body panels collect the most skin oil and cannot be unzipped

The hybrid that works: wash covers per the rules once a year, and book extraction for the full piece — covers on — when the sofa fails the sniff test or before events (a sofa takes 45–90 minutes).

The renter math

Half of IKEA’s NYC sofas live in rentals, and stained furniture is a classic deposit deduction (the move-out guide). A professional clean from $99 against a replacement cover at $150–300 — or a deposit fight — is the easy end of the spreadsheet. IKEA cover FAQ

My cover shrank — can it be stretched back?

Slightly, while damp: re-dress the cushion with the cover a touch wet and let it dry in place. Serious shrinkage is one-way; next time wash colder and skip the dryer.

Can you clean a sofa with the covers on?

Yes — that is standard extraction, and it treats cover plus foam together. We only remove covers when a stain needs back-side access.

Discontinued cover, stained beyond hope?

Before hunting resale sites for a discontinued SKU, let a pro attempt it — most “beyond hope” IKEA covers are just residue-gray, and extraction resets them.
