Kid messes on upholstery come in three physical states — sticky polymer (slime), drying dough (Play-Doh), and pure adhesive (stickers and tape) — and each needs the opposite treatment of the others. Use the wrong one and you set the mess. Here is the correct playbook for each, tested on more NYC family sofas than we can count.
Slime: the polymer problem
- Do not pull warm slime — it stretches deeper into the weave. Chill it first: a zip bag of ice on the spot for ten minutes turns goo into a lift-able solid.
- Lift the hardened mass with a spoon edge, scraping toward the center.
- Dissolve the residue: white vinegar dabbed on the remnant breaks the polymer; blot, do not rub. Test a hidden spot first — vinegar is not for every fabric (the vinegar caveat).
- Rinse-blot with plain water, then dry with airflow.
Glitter slime adds a bonus round: the glitter stays after the polymer is gone and only real extraction pulls it from the pile.
Play-Doh: patience beats products
Wet Play-Doh smears; dried Play-Doh crumbles. So do the counterintuitive thing — let it dry completely, hours if needed, then break and vacuum the crumbs and brush the spot with a stiff brush. A cold-water blot lifts the color trace. The classic mistake is hot water: it melts the salt-flour dough into a paste that bonds with fiber (same physics as the protein-stain rule).
Stickers, tape and their adhesive shadows
- Peel what peels — slowly, at a flat angle, warming the sticker a few seconds with a hairdryer on low so the adhesive releases instead of splitting
- The leftover shadow is adhesive that will collect dirt into a gray patch; dab with a drop of dish soap in warm water and blot until the tack is gone
- Skip the internet favorites — Goo Gone and acetone dissolve adhesive AND fabric dyes; the ring they leave is worse than the sticker (products that backfire)
