Spring Deep Clean Checklist for a NYC Apartment: Upholstery, Mattress, Rugs

The day the radiators shut off is the right day to deal with what they left behind: a winter of dry dust blown onto every fabric surface in a sealed apartment. Spring cleaning in a NYC apartment is mostly about soft surfaces, because that is where the season settled. Here is a checklist in the order that actually matters.

Priority order (by where allergens live)

  1. Mattress — a winter of dust mites under the duvet. Deep clean, then a protector. See how often to clean a mattress.
  2. Sofa and armchairs — radiator dust bonded with skin oils; this is the gray film you notice in spring light. Sofa cleaning.
  3. Area rugs — grit from winter boots at the base of the pile. Rug cleaning.
  4. Headboard, dining chairs, stools — add-ons to the same visit; cheap when bundled.
  5. Curtains, bedding, throws — washable; do them the same week.

DIY this week

  • Vacuum every upholstered surface slowly with the brush tool, including under cushions and the backs of sofas that face radiators
  • Wash all bedding, pillow protectors and throws hot
  • Wipe radiator covers and the wall behind them — that dust re-settles on fabric otherwise
  • Rotate the mattress, flip cushions
  • Open windows for a real cross-breeze for an afternoon

Book this month

One visit covers mattress + sofa + rug in about three hours; everything dries the same day. Spring is our busiest season, so book a week or two ahead for a weekend slot. All five boroughs and NJ — e.g. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens.

While you are at it

  • Outdoor cushions out of storage: mildew clean before the first balcony evening
  • Allergy household? Schedule the next deep clean for early fall — see NYC apartment allergies
  • Leather furniture: clean and condition after the dry heating months — why leather cracks

Spring cleaning FAQ

Is spring or fall the better time for a deep clean?

Both, for different reasons: spring removes the winter load, fall lowers the baseline before radiator season. One a year — spring; two — both.

Can everything be done in one visit?

Mattress, sofa, rug, chairs — yes, typically 2.5–3.5 hours. Bundled pricing is lower per item than separate visits.

Will the apartment smell like cleaning products?

No — fragrance-free solutions and full extraction. It smells like open windows, which is the point.
